Things left unsaid....

Do you ever find you have left things unsaid…that needed to be said? Suddenly it’s too late to go back and say what you really wanted to say. The opportunity is gone. The person is gone. The audience is gone. Suddenly its an awkward situation trying to go back and say what we really wanted to say…our should have said. There are clearly times when something deep within us (Holy Spirit many times) is prompting us to say something. Maybe its words of affirmation, encouragement or love. Other times its standing up for what is right…in the face of what is wrong.

As we transition from this time of Thanksgiving into Christmas we will be faced with numerous times to just share from our heart. Many times with family or friends…other times with complete strangers. Will I be ready…will you be ready?

Here are the lyrics from one of my favorite songs by Kutless.

"It's Like Me" by Kutless from the project Sea of Faces
My conversation is leading nowhere
And we talk of God but still I don't share
So many times that I just never saw the chance
It's like me to never see
When it came, when it went
Now it's gone away
It's so like me to never see
When it came, when it went
Now it's gone away
The phone rings with news that he's gone
Just the time I shared my heart was prepared and another soul was won
So much truth to tell, I am so glad I saw the chance
It's like me to never see
When it came, when it went
Now it's gone away
It's so like me to never see
When it came, when it went
Now it's gone away
Sometimes I still never see when perfect opportunities come my way
Would my care increase if I truly believed that a life could be saved
It's like me to never see
When it came, when it went
Now it's gone away
It's so like me to never see
When it came, when it went
Now it's gone away

Thanksgiving...

So just what is Thanksgiving to you? Is it just another day? Is it an excuse for a day off? Is it just food and football?

Ninety-two times we find the words Give Thanks in the Bible. Over and over we find that giving thanks is also associated with changing perspective or attitude. How true it is, when we just take time to give thanks we cant help but change our attitude. Self begins to melt away as we focus on God and His many blessings. Our perspective changes and life takes on a whole new look. As we take time to celebrate Thanksgiving, take time to give thanks.

Yesterday in our children's ministry at church, the lesson looked at three of the feasts which God set up for the Israelites to observe. The purpose of each one of these special times is to stop and take time to remember what God has done; deliverance, provision, protection. What does our list look like...I dare say we find the same things today. If we don't, it's not because God isn't working...most likely its because we aren't looking. I challenge each of us to take five minuets each day this week to just list the things we are thankful for...and then take time to thank God for each of them.

Happy Thanksgiving Week...

Exhaustion...

Exhaustion can fog and cloud life...

I have not forgotten about this blog, but I need to stop, study and listen. This week has been a stack of very long days.

Tonight it's time to get some rest before pushing through the next five days...I'm half way home. God continues to bless and for that I am thankful.

Fight, Flight...or Freeze

Our human nature is wired with natural reactions to what seem to be overwhelming circumstances. We have been told that our bodies have a "fight or flight" circuit within us to protect us. I would add that we have a third reaction as well...freeze. When we encounter an attack, realize we have been ambushed or become overwhelmed with fear we then have a choice. We fight, we run or we freeze.

Society has told us that to turn and fight is the brave thing, to run is cowardly. I would propose that all three reactions have their place and can be used for victory.

At times we need to turn and face the enemy and fight with skill and power. In the Chronicles of Narnia, when Peter was given his sword and shield, he was told the day was approaching when he would need these tools...and that they were tools not toys. We too, as believers, are given a Shield of Faith and a Sword of the Spirit. Jesus continually showed us how to wield both of these as He would turn to Satan and strike him down with The Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. (No, we cannot neglect the other pieces of Armor which we have been given which are outlined in Ephesians 6, but we can discuss those at another time.) As we turn and face the attacks of our enemy we will find that we begin to discover who we are in Christ.

To run or to freeze seem weak and dangerous in the heat of battle, when the attacks surprise us and catch us off guard. If we are weak, unprepared or untrained for battle these may be wise choices. For the skilled warrior or the conscience warrior, I propose that there may still be a time to run or to freeze. If we are running to a stronger position for battle...then that is wise. If we are running to rescue another who is wounded...that is noble. If we are running to lead the enemy to a greater battle which has been prepared...then that is well planned. My point is if we are running to hide by ourselves and avoid the battle...we will surely die or will others who we are charged with to protect.

To freeze is much like running...except you are an even easier target for the enemy. The Word tells us that our enemy is like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. Sure, he will pick off the weak and feeble, but if he can freeze a leader, one of the strong ones, what an enjoyable meal that would be. The lion will freeze his prey with a mighty roar to strike fear in his prey...to freeze them in their tracks. When fear overcomes and locks us up we are an easy target. I propose though that there is a time when we need to freeze. When we are suddenly overwhelmed by the circumstances or just found ourselves in the midst of an ambush we may need to freeze and asses the situation. If we react with the circumstances or with the flow of the ambush we may find we have been led into the slaughter. We need to freeze in the safest position possible, fully and accurately asses the situation, gain our footing and then act in power and confidence.

"The Thief has come to steal, kill and destroy...but I have come that they might have life and have it abundantly"

"we have not been given a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind"

"He said to me:"It is done. I am the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End. To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life. He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be be his God and he will be My son. But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile...and all liars-their place will be in the fiery lake"

We are not called to a life of cowardly fear. To my surprise last night I realized that God hates that and names it with others who will be cast into the lake of fire. "The Lord is a Warrior, the Lord is His name." Exodus 15:3

Let me leave this last thought from the Matrix. In the subway as Neo realizes the Agent has found him a fight ensues. Neo is protecting his friends so that they can get out of the Matrix and back to safety. The porthole out is lost and Neo is getting absolutely beat up by the Agent. There is a break and Neo makes a run for the stairs out of the subway. There is light at the top of the stairs, he could get out, but realizes that there will only be another Agent waiting and he will still have to fight the battle. Neo freezes at the base of the stairs and then turns to face the Agent. He faces the battle with a resolve and strength like never before. Those outside the Matrix are watching asking what he is doing because he most likely will get killed. Morpheus calmly says with a grin, "he is beginning to understand who he is." Neo then fights the Agent with a power that he has never experience before and kills the agent. It is a great scene packed with analogy after analogy from the Bible.

When we face the evil and darkness of this world in our own strength, we will get our butt kicked and may very well die. When we fight in the power of His might with the "tools" He has given us, the victory is ours...for the Glory of God!

The Quiet Stillness

When we just stop...stop long enough to take our focus off of ourselves or the circumstances around us, we will be changed. The huge mountains of anxiety, frustration, anger, fear and a ton of other emotions will begin to fade. When we simply and honestly come to God in a place of quiet our perspective begins to change. As The Message says in Matthew 6:6, we begin to sense His grace. All of these emotions have their place, but their place is not to control us. They are to stir us to action. They are to stir us to come to God with authenticity. God wants us to talk, yell, scream, sing or sob...what He wants is our heart. Coming before Him and laying out our heart can me a difficult thing to do...but think about this, it is safer with Him than with any other human on earth! God cares for us like a father, not like a father of abandonment and abuse...but a father who passionately cares for us.

Dumping our load on God does help us feel some better...when we believe He truly cares. When we don't fully believe and dump our load anyway, we are taking a step of faith...and it's a start. But after we dump our load...don't stop and walk away...wait.

After pour our heart out...we need to be silent. Silent to hear what God is saying in our heart. Audible no, real yes. Something deep within will begin to whisper direction, clarity, wisdom, love and grace. Its this quiet time that most of us forget but its the time that God can minister to us. I mean really, isn't that what we want most, God to minister to us? As the focus shifts from us to God, we begin to experience His peace.

This is a portion of what I experienced in the mountains of Colorado...

Matthew 6:5-7 (The Message)

Pray with Simplicity

5"And when you come before God, don't turn that into a theatrical production either. All these people making a regular show out of their prayers, hoping for stardom! Do you think God sits in a box seat?

6"Here's what I want you to do: Find a quiet, secluded place so you won't be tempted to role-play before God. Just be there as simply and honestly as you can manage. The focus will shift from you to God, and you will begin to sense His grace.

7-13"The world is full of so-called prayer warriors who are prayer-ignorant. They're full of formulas and programs and advice, peddling techniques for getting what you want from God. Don't fall for that nonsense. This is your Father you are dealing with, and He knows better than you what you need. With a God like this loving you, you can pray very simply. Like this:
Our Father in heaven,
Reveal who You are.
Set the world right;
Do what's best— as above, so below.
Keep us alive with three square meals.
Keep us forgiven with You and forgiving others.
Keep us safe from ourselves and the Devil.
You're in charge!
You can do anything You want!
You're ablaze in beauty!
Yes. Yes. Yes.

"The Reason for the Warrior"

Once again, this just fits...

Today I am going to post from today's devotional that came from Ransomed Heart Ministries. This series of devotionals are all excerpts from books written by John Eldredge.

The Reason For The Warrior
10/23/2008

Our God is a Warrior because there are certain things in life worth fighting for, must be fought for. He makes man a Warrior in his own image, because he intends for man to join him in that battle.

One day the young man Moses, prince of Egypt, went out to see for himself the oppression of his kinsmen. When he witnessed firsthand an Egyptian taskmaster beating a Hebrew slave, he couldn’t bear it, and killed the man. A rash act, for which he becomes a fugitive, but you see something of the Warrior emerging in him. Years later, God sends him back to set all his people free, and, I might add, it is one intense fight to win that freedom. David also fights, battle after battle, to win the freedom of his people and unite the tribes of Israel. Something in the man compelled him, that same something that wouldn’t allow Lincoln to simply sit by and watch the Union tear itself apart, wouldn’t permit Churchill—despite the views of many of his own countrymen—to sit by and let the Nazis take over Europe unopposed. For he knew that in the end they would have England, too.

There are certain things worth fighting for. A marriage, for example, or the institution of marriage as a whole. Children, whether they are yours or not. Friendships will have to be fought for, as you’ve discovered by now, and churches, too, which seem bent on destroying themselves if they are not first destroyed by the enemy who hates them. Many people feel that earth itself is worth fighting for. Doctors fight for the lives of their patients, and teachers for the hearts and futures of their students. Take anything good, true, or beautiful upon this earth and ask yourself, “Can this be protected without a fight?”

A Heavy Spirit...

Yesterday was an interesting day. Once again we had the opportunity to serve at Stonecreek...which comes with all of the added benefits that hanging with friends brings. But there was just something not quite right. Most of the day I talked with people who were battling everything from just being tired, headaches, not feeling well to those who lost their job without notice last week. Even at lunch with great friends...not everyone seemed themselves. Something was amiss. Even my girls battled unusual headaches and aches that didn't make sense. I couldn't quite put my finger on it but it was clearly bigger than we could see.

Want to know what our study series is a church...SPIRITUAL WARFARE!

A few weeks ago we were ready for the attacks and could see them coming head on. They were large and easy to spot from a distance...now they are more subtle and relentless! They have moved from circumstances to direct afflictions on the families, physical bodies and financial well being of believers who make a difference.

Last night I was searching for just what the spirit was that I was sensing throughout the day...then I asked. A spirit of heaviness. As Cindy and I turned and prayed against it, peace began to return. Today was an incredibly beautiful day and much easier than yesterday. Believe what you want, but I am convinced that Spiritual Warfare is much more real that most of us give credit. When we set out to expose the spirit of darkness with the Truth of God...hold on!

The following is an excerpt from a web site I found which put it well...

Satan is also called the Adversary. He opposes us in our walk with God. He uses many tricks and devices. One of his tactics is to send a "spirit of heaviness" upon us. When we recognize this we are able to over come him easily.

Ephesians 6:11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles (methods - cunning, crafts) of the devil.

The Spirit of Heaviness

Isaiah 61:3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.

SPIRIT is "ruwach" This is the same word used for all spiritual life and beings including God. It is used also of breath and air. It does not mean "a feeling" or attitude.

  • This is not mans own spirit, which is called "the spirit of man"
  • This is not God's spirit, nor can it be from God
  • It is a demonic spirit.

HEAVINESS means " somewhat dark 5, darkish 1, wax dim 1, smoking 1, heaviness 1; 9 dim, dull, colorless, be dark, faint :". It is a word used in the bible to describe:

  • the effect of a plague darkening the skin,
  • the dimness of the eyes in old age,
  • a fire gone out of a flax (reed), still smoking and not extinguished.
  • a heavy spirit.

THE EFFECT OF A SPIRIT OF HEAVINESS

  • It darkens our countenance: Our hearts are down cast. This spirit brings a "heaviness" over us..
  • It dims our vision, robs our hope. The room may actually look darker.
  • It brings a heavy, oppressive feeling. It quenches our faith.
  • It may come over many at once , like a plague. It can be like a cloud, hanging over a place.
  • It causes us to isolate, it steals our love, makes us feel alone.

OVERTHROWING THE SPIRIT OF HEAVINESS

  1. Recognize it. This is not you, you are a child of God. This is not God's will for you. Romans 8:31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?
  2. Don't believe anything negative you think under it's influence. Accept no criticism of yourself or others. 2 Corinthians 10:5 We destroy arguments and every proud obstacle to the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,
  3. Put on the Garment of Praise (Is 61:3) This literally means to be "Wrapped Up In Praise" God has given it to you to put on. Take action including adoration, thanksgiving, singing and glorifying. Get loud, get definite, aggressive! Wrestle it down. (Eph.6)

FOLLOW THESE STEPS AND you will get a victory over this tactic of the Adversary.
